Uh-oh...we're in trouble now!
Friendicans, Rebels, TroubleMakers of all ages!
I am exceedingly pleased to introduce you all to a local lass (yes, another Ct Yankee, 2 in 1 week!), a lovely lady, a TroubleMaker of the best kind, someone whom I KNOW you will all LOVE as much as I do, a good friend, not only aware and awake to the evils of this world, but eager and willing to take action and risk set them right, a person whom I deeply admire, whom I am proud to welcome to Friendica, the one and only:

Cycling today.
No running today, but I cycled, c. 6.6 miles.
Here's my route:

I
LOVE
riding my bicycle!
Here it is:

It is a used Fuji hybrid (handlebar came from a Trek, though). I bought it used at The Devil's Gear for $300 in summer of 2011 (photo is from 2011, which is why it says "My New Bike", even though I've had it for nearly 2 years now). Now that I am without a car, that $300 is proving a very worthy investment.
I find I can get around the city faster on my bicycle that in a car, in most cases. Plus, of course, it's healthier.
There are many bike lanes and paths in my city. We need more bike racks, though. You can get around okay, but you can't always find somewhere to lock your bike. Also, they need to clean the broken glass and stuff out of the streets better/more often (and people need to litter less).

I like newegg a lot. Their shipping is fast, but that could be because they have warehouses here in California. I just ordered something today that is scheduled to be here tomorrow...
, but I have heard good things about tigerdirect. I will try them next time. I do need a new hard drive

I've never ordered anything from newegg.
For years I've been ordering stuff from http://www.tigerdirect.com
I have two full machines built from parts I bought there (main workstation and the little server).
I got my laptop on ebay (old dell d420).

I occasionally buy a few from Newegg.com when they have a sale.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166017
I think I have 2 or 3 of these in my current desktop.
Hard-drives, network adapters and routers seem to be components that go out a lot, so I keep spares around at any given moment.

Hmmm...I couldn't find an extra ethernet card. Thought I had one, but no.
But if I keep the router connected to the physical server, then connect the main workstation+centosvmserver to the comcast modem, perhaps I can split that, send ssh and ftp to my debian box and http to the centos server.
Oh, but the centos server has a distinct internal IP address, because the router has assigned it one. I suppose the comcast modem/router would do the same, no? Assign an internal IP to each machine connected, even if two are connected to the same input (after all, the linksys router IS doing precisely that).

perhaps I'd keep everything connected to the router as it is, and then connect this second network card to their modem and use the other IP address thus?

Yeah, but in the router I already have all ssh coming to my main box and all http/ftp/irc going to the physical debian server.
I don't think my router will split stuff.
perhaps I'd keep everything connected to the router as it is, and then connect this second network card to their modem and use the other IP address thus?
I could probably dig up another ethernet card somewhere.

It is confusing. but once you play with it a bit it starts coming into focus. You definitely have the temperament for it. Most people do not have the patience for such things, which is why I am able to make enough money to live on.

If you have an extra Network adapter handy (and an extra PCI slot in your VBox Host machine) you can assign that network adapter to the virtual-machine (in VirtualBox>Settings>Network>Bridged Adapter...choose the extra network adapter...eth3 or whatever..)
Now you can plug that extra adapter into whichever router and forward whatever ports to it you want without interfering with your host computers network settings

I don't know if their modem thingy has wifi.
Because, I think I could plug everthing wired here into their modem (main debian workhorse, with centos vm on it, physical debian server, and my kid's win7 box), but I'd still need my router plugged in to get wifi on our phones and my laptop, I think.
I think I'd have to buy extra IP address to really make this centos one live/public, because I need one for the physical debian server, another for the centos server, and don't I still need another one that is a gateway to the lan, like now, I have two, one for the public IP address, and one as a gateway to their router/modem or something?
This stuff confuses me.

I realize, if I can give it the other IP address, I could then give it a subdomain of one of my domains, by setting an arecord in my registrar's control panel (mydomain.com).
I could make it http://centaur.tonybaldwin.info or something.
But really, like I say, it's a tiny server, 10gb storage, 1mb ram, and mostly here for just experimental purposes.

I do not have a how-to written up, but its not really complex: the Comcast-Modem/router thingee just bridges the internet to your router, so your router should be configured to be using the static IP.
Meanwhile, the Comcast-router has it's own IP address and can have computers plugged into it.
Whatever computers are plugged into your router (and your router forwards the ports to them) should be using your static IP
Whatever computers are plugged directly into the Comcast router (and comcast router is forwarding the ports to those) will be using the other IP
The comcast-router IP will most likely be one-off from your purchased static IP.

So, I could point their router's IP at the vm server, perhaps?
I have all SSH pointed at my main box, through my router, and http/irc pointed at my debian server.
Do you have an howto or docu on how to use this other IP address?
I could buy an additional 3 IP addresses for something like $20/month, but haven't yet found a need/use for them, since I only have one server in here actually serving stuff to the public. The CentOS server is off, at the moment. I just turn it on to play.

Interesting little tidbit: Comcast business with a static IP, you actually have 2 static IP addresses. One points to their modem thingee, and the other can be applied to your router.
I set up the network for a small office in town, and stumbled onto that.
The Comcast modem uses xx.xx.xx.89, and the static IP they assigned, which is applied to the office router, uses xx.xx.xx.90
You can effectively separate the two and have two entirely different static IP's for whatever.
In this case, one is set up to SSh into the office, while the other is used on a back-up server down in the cellar. I had more stuff hooked up (like own-cloud and some web-apps), but recently reduced it all down for security.

I assume things like that are particularly useful to hosts with big servers running multiple VPS in VMs on them.
I use that script to run my torrent-box vmachine (Transmission, SickBeard, Couchpotato), and then another vmachine that has my web and mail server.
Works very nicely, and keeps everything away from my main OS.
DD-Wrt routers make great internal DNS servers. You can just give every machine (or vmachine) a name (or many names).
