@zottel, have you ever checked "Zotero" [ http://www.zotero.org/ ], which can be used as a online database as well as privately adapted to your specific kind of storage possibilities. As there are a lot of participants you may find German articles and titles as well on it, and there is also the possibility to be directly connected with db-s of libraries (I am not sure to what extend). It's open source, freeware, and can be used by an extension tool on several browsers, e.g. FF.

Following up on offene's comment, Zotero offers a "Scan for Zotero" Android app that I find rather useful. As I receive books, I scan the bar code on the back cover. I then export the library via Firefox's Zotero add-on and have BibTex-formatted data that I can use to populate entries into the biblio module I have on my Drupal installation at https://disunitedstates.com

I find the information isn't always quite accurate. There are also inconsistencies in capitalization. And Drupal's biblio module leaves a lot to be desired, in handling author information and book chapters.

#Zotero offers to add multiple content entries/items via Identifier. Just checked the Z.-FF-add-on with 9753160623 and it works. I know Z is not an OS-Web-DB solution. But the solution is powered by standards and a huge budget.

Thanks for the tips. I think Zotero is not the right thing for me as more or less perfect data will be required. I was a bookseller once, and I like my bibliographical data to be absolutely complete.

As a complete library system, Koha might actually be a little too much, but I think I'll try a test installation.

But first, I'll wait until @Charles Roth is back from his trip. I remember his post about that, too, but I can't find it anymore. He'll probably be able to give me a few more tips on the matter.

So, you're looking for pretty much an open source online catalog to keep digital books, have suppotr for public sources with ISBN/EAN/UPC and can be downloaded with an Android client? Hmm...honestly, I can't think of anything beyond doing some sort of custom solution.

This sounds like an appealing idea for a hobby project, though. I remember a few years back how frustrated I was at not finding something similar.

@zottel , part of the problem with Zotero is a GIGO (garbage in, garbage out) problem. I use it as a start and fix it in my own system. But the biblio extension for Drupal also has problems, mostly with how it displays information, so it can be fixed, but they haven't yet.

I looked at Koha too, since it came up in this thread. Right now, I'm feeling a little shy about getting into more headaches.

Install F-Droid - Android Foss Repository on your Android device, start it and update, then download and install Barcode and Book Catalogue. When you start Book Catalogue, hit the menu button, touch Add Book-button and Add by Barcode. Your camera will activate to read the barcode on your book, and then you will be offered to download ISBN information, so make sure your Wi-Fi is setup. Good luck!
