But the new algorithm only kicks in when the ration of height to width is greater than 16:9. The one with grandpa was a single panel and not a vertical "strip", so it should've come out right regardless.

It's pretty easy to add stuff to templates. If the theme doesn't use the added stuff (which could be completely different flavours of the existing stuff), nobody will ever know any better.

Well, that's the thing, every template has a different set of vars it can access.
Sure, it's easy to add some, but in the end we'll end up having just every possible vars for each template (or most of them anyway), since theme makers will surely ask for it one day or another.
So, imho, better to "centralize" it right away than wait for it to be a necessity, it will save some work in the future.
I also think that the way we handle themes can be improved a lot, and that we can get rid of the mandatory templates (view/*.tpl) to allow themes to set that up as they want, as long as they can have access to what page/tab/whatever is to be displayed, they can decide on what template to display and how to display it by themselves.

I'm having vague thoughts about a Friendica "currency".
Currency is the wrong word, but I don't know which other one to use. Nothing fancy, just a LETS system, but without the L.
Haven't got much further than that with the idea yet though.

Time banking is consistent with the mutual gratitude proposal which I have been working on, we call our basic units Hypostatic Unity and Gratitude (HUGs) or alternately designate them Hypostasis of Our United Re-creation (HOURs). ref: http://tinyurl.com/asmugu1 :)

A forum for discussion of a Friendica Social Currency Project is here:
https://allstreets.org/profile/gratitude
All who want to have a focused discussion on a system that hopefully can accommodate a number of metaphors for replacing debt money with gift economics are especially welcome. :)
Mutual credit and "time bank" concepts are also very on-topic for understanding and bridge building.
My hope is we can implement a basic plug-in for Friendica which will provide a useful foundation for large scale distributed mutually cooperative enterprises to build upon.

Public Friendica servers will die soon. What's the point of a federated social web when the only other player is made by the same people?
Nah, Friendica will cease to exist as you know it today, and Fred will become the federated social web instead.
Friendica will turn into what it was supposed to be - a swiss army knife for communications. It'll be the backbone of personal home pages, not a social network that just happens to do tonnes of other stuff too. The "tonnes of other stuff" will be why people use it. The opposite of now.
The game is changing.
Diaspora won't work. OStatus still won't have discovered privacy. Email won't have blocked spam. RSS won't handle comments. By the time any of them have what we already have, we'll have moved on to a new world. It's already too late for all of them.

Thomas Willingham

In Russian, Babushka means Grandmother. Matryoshka is the name of those Russian dolls.
In English, Matryoshka are called Babushka. (This may not be a dictionary definition, but it's certainly very, very common). It really is a loan word...but it's the wrong loan word.

Is there anyone left who hasn't given up on BitCoin?
It was a fantastic idea of a decentralised currency, but then everyone forgot the decentralised bit. Oh no, not me, I'll use one of the half a dozen big wallet services, and then act all surprised when it fucks up.
Kinda like the federated social web - everyone talks a good game, but when it comes down to it, they don't really care.
So yeah...what's the point of BitCoin if it is centralised, incestual, and it's value vulnerable to hacking, on top of the problems it would have if people did do it properly (like not being sticky, potential legal isssues, etc)?

A look at the Bitcoin network transaction history
The paper ends with a discussion of the largest Bitcoin transactions, and it seems like there has been a concerted effort by one party to try to hide wealth accumulation by breaking up a large chunk of Bitcoins and moving it around in thousands of smaller transactions. The authors are very factual about their findings, but to me it seems clear that there is something not right going on.
I encourage people interested in Bitcoin to read the paper. To me it is clear evidence that the current version of a decentralised payment system is not working as intended. Unless you’re a conspiracy theory and believe that Bitcoin is an attempt to get rich quick, in which case it might well be working for some of the minority which hold most Bitcoins.

What it does is put the web back to what it should have been all along. It does all the things $ElederlyRelative asks you why you can't do all the time.

I've given up on the idea of arbitrary_aside and am instead pressing on with somewhat_arbitrary_aside.
I was hitting problems were malformed HTML (or more often, dodgy javascript - I'm looking at you every live match widget on the planet) could WSoD an entire account. That's the same reason we don't allow HTML in pageheader (though in that case, it will kill the whole site).
The alternative is to allow arbitrary BBCode instead of arbitrary content. BBCode is pretty flexible, and I think that will handle most people's needs anyway.

I notice some people copying my addons are also copying the CSS.
is required only for large iframes.
The zeros come with an indentation of 120px on the left. If you embed a huge iframe, that knocks the iframe off to the right on low resolutions and causes sideways scrolling. This is a compromise - it pushes it completely to the left, but a higher value and it does weird things in Dispy.
If you're only using small iframes, you don't need it at all, and using it makes things look uglier than they need to.

Most people will want to host their own. A problem that caught me off guard and took a good fifteen minutes of head scratching, was that it looks in .htconfig.php for your credentials. If it then gets installed in the same place as a Friendica/Fred server, it grabs those credentials instead.
All you have to do is change require(".htconfig.php"); to something else.
I used require(".htfortune.php");
This can be anything, but keeping the .ht bit is a good idea.
