Cycling today.
No running today, but I cycled, c. 6.6 miles.
Here's my route:

I
LOVE
riding my bicycle!
Here it is:

It is a used Fuji hybrid (handlebar came from a Trek, though). I bought it used at The Devil's Gear for $300 in summer of 2011 (photo is from 2011, which is why it says "My New Bike", even though I've had it for nearly 2 years now). Now that I am without a car, that $300 is proving a very worthy investment.
I find I can get around the city faster on my bicycle that in a car, in most cases. Plus, of course, it's healthier.
There are many bike lanes and paths in my city. We need more bike racks, though. You can get around okay, but you can't always find somewhere to lock your bike. Also, they need to clean the broken glass and stuff out of the streets better/more often (and people need to litter less).

Closed trails
@Cyclists @Bikepacking & Trails
... so you shrugged your shoulders as the forestry commission announced the closure of your favourite home trail, thinking you would just ride it illegally. Initially, of course, that didn't pose much of a problem. But a couple of thunderstorms showed you whose arm was the longer. Stubborn non-maintenance is all that's required. Of course, I could think of half a dozen people who would gladly help clear the track. But it can't be done without a chain saw and a pick axe, so I'm thinking we won't get away with it.

Belated start to the bike season
@Bikepacking & Trails @Cyclists
Fitness has gone down the drain after a physically lazy winter and spring (except for skiing). But it's interesting to note that downhill trail skills don't seem to suffer much - the mindset and associated coordination skills somehow remain honed. What does change are the trails themselves: a log where once there wasn't, a mound gone, rock gardens that appear to have moved.

Track Workouts
I'm still looking for a way to track my workouts. Most of the data comes from GPX files.
I discovered http://www.endomondo.com/, which does exactly what I need. There is also connect.garmin.com - but this one doesn't read GPX files from my N900.
But still, both of them are closed services and they don't even use Openstreetmap for the mapping part (it's all Google Maps)
Does anyone know a free alternative to such services? Maybe someone from @Cyclists or @Bikepacking & Trails uses something similar?

Thanks for the tip, this looks like a good mapping tool. But unfortunately that's not what I'm looking for. It lacks any sports tracking ability (like today I cycles this and this distance in whatever time or today I spent 30 minutes in the gym doing whatever and so on...)

GPX diary?
@Cyclists @Bikepacking & Trails does anyone know a good tool to keep track of the cycle tours. I record gpx files, but I don't know what to with them afterwards....

Some bike videos are encouraging
@Bikepacking & Trails @Cyclists
I know why I don't normally search the video sites for keywords like freeriding, but I broke the rule for once this morning... and my first hit was actually a clip that didn't shame and depress me! Hey, if that's freeriding, even I can do it. Whoopee!

Trails and skis
@Bikepacking & Trails @Cyclists
Lots of similarities between hard(ish) trail riding and downhill skiing, as I'm discovering yet again this year. The skis have kept my mind on form for the trails... same kind of terrain-based fast decision making. Though you are usually much faster on skis, the bike can actually feel faster because the ground beneath you offers even more variety and the surprises come at shorter notice.
Something I noticed last summer: I went to the snowdome with my son one Saturday and out in the woods on Sunday. All of a sudden, he was risking new things on the bike.

This is my bike. Not really new.
I too the photo last summer when I purchased the bicycle used.
It's a Fuji, but has Trek handlebars, sturdy but light frame, slick tires, not skinny, but not knobby, wide MT bike tires, either. Good for bouncing over curbs and zipping around the city, but not so good for off-road.

Loctite stupidity
@Cyclists @Bikepacking & Trails
I'm still angry about this... my expensive wheels were laced with Loctite as if I were a pro racer - something I discovered when I wanted a friend to service them for me. I'm going to send them back to the manufacturer, which shouldn't cost any money, but will probably take a few weeks. That means I'll have to buy a (dirt) cheap set of wheels to replace them, since Spring is already setting in and I don't want to take a break from riding.

I have a friend who rides all winter.
I don't.
I have a Saab for that, and hiking boots.
I ride Spring-Fall, but not in snow.

A Friendica group for wild cycling preferences
Bikepacking & Trails ( https://trails.pyxis.uberspace.de/profile/trails ) is for cyclists who love to get off the roads and off the dirt roads, too... and perhaps also spend the occasional night out in the wild. In a sense, you could view us as a subforum of the @Cyclists group on kakste.com. Join both, and you can post selectively from your stream - depending on whether you think your post is interesting for cyclists in general or only for the rougher crowd.
Just @-mention one or both groups in your thread starters.

The issues with Diaspora users and Friendica groups have been fixed. Diaspora users don't have to do anything, the fix is done transparently on our side. All groups running the latest code will now work for you. You may have to visit our public website (http://kakste.com/profile/cyclists) to see all the posts though.

When I updated the profile page to include instructions for Diaspora users, I accidentally deleted the attribution for my profile picture. I've fixed that now, but it's still worth a post of apology.
The picture is taken from this Flickr user who has several albums with lots of really nice cycling related photographs, you should take a look.

Need to take my mountain-bike wheels back to the shop before the guarantee expires - some nit laced them up with loctite, so I can't get them properly trued anymore. (Wall to wall post.)
